Ancient Sekhmet (Lion) Amulet

Material : Carved Soapstone

Dimensions: 1 1/4" (32mm) high by 3/4" (18mm) wide at base by 5/16" (8mm) deep.

Length of necklace is about 17" long with graduated faceted emeralds and 18kt yellow gold smooth beads.

Condition: Excellent

Comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Description : The hand carved soapstone of this amulet has a medium to pale greenish blue color with a slight dirt patina. The coloring is slightly faded on one side. We added an 18kt gold peg with bail for wearability. The lion amulet hangs from a modern 18kt yellow gold, ancient style clasp/loop. Closure is in front only.

About Sekhmet

Traditionally Sekhmet is depicted as goddess of war and destruction. Sekhmet has been represented as a woman's body with a lion's head or as a lion. She also represents fire, destruction, rebirth and transformation. Sekhmet, as the solar deity is also called Lady of Maat, and symbolized the visible manifestation of the original cosmic order. Maat was the fixed, unchanging, eternal pattern of existence and harmony of both celestial and terrestrial worlds. Appeasing her assured victory of harmony over disorder, and life over death. Sekhmet was feared and was designated as a solar goddess who protected the sun thereby maintaining cyclical time. The Powerful One, symbolized the struggle of the positive and negative elements of the universe.

Lioness of the Sun, Lady of Flame and Terror, she was depicted as having dual aspects of being benevolent and malevolent. Sekhmet was protector of the king, assuring the inheritance of the creator to his created and protected the Two Lands, assuring harmony between its people.

Sekhmet was also thought to be the creative fire, the energizing life force within creation. To the ancient Egyptians the form of the lion represented fear and power.
