14kt Gold Meteorite Pendant with Faceted Garnets
This one of a kind pendant contains a meteorite slice set in a fine silver bezel
which has been set into an 14kt gold filigree frame with 14kt gold lobster
claw clasp and beads.
The pendant measures 1 ¼” (3.2 cm) from the top of the 1/3 ct. faceted garnet
trillion to the bottom and it is just under 7/8” (2.1 cm) wide. It is strung
on a 16” strand of beautifully faceted sparkling deep red garnets. The
meteorite slice has been cut, ground, polished and etched with alcohol to
allow the crystalline structure to be seen. It is an iron meteorite consisting
of an iron-nickel metal alloy. The distinctive crystalline structure has bands
containing low and high levels of nickel known as Widmanstatten texture.
Meteorites are rocks of extraterrestrial origin. Of all the diverse kinds of
meteorites, these iron-nickel meteorites are the most prized as gemrocks. The
surface on this particular piece looks like little pyramids. The interesting
lines and striations are associated with the crystal formation. The patterns
form only deep inside planetary bodies that take millions of years to cool. Iron
never crystallizes this way on Earth's surface, so metal showing these patterns
on Earth are definitely from a meteorite.
Picture is slightly enlarged to show the detail.
Truly unusual, this unique necklace with be enjoyed for generations!
